Auto-reply to Instagram comments with a DM: no monthly fee, DIY setup 2026
Last updated 2026-10-13From Plien Roob — AI model photography for online stores

Yes, with OpenReply — an open-source program (MIT licence) that sends a DM with a link to anyone who comments on your Instagram post or reel, by wiring together 5 free-tier services with no monthly subscription as of 13 October 2026. It works only with Instagram and your own account, requires a card with Oracle for identity checks, and you set it up yourself step by step.
We are not the developer of OpenReply and not a partner of the services mentioned on this page. The program is written by Diwen Huang (MIT licence). The cover is a screenshot of OpenReply's own demo site. Each provider's free terms were checked on 13 October 2026 and can change — check the official pages again before you start.
How it works: 5 boxes chained together
When someone comments, Instagram sends a signal to your web app, the web app puts a job in a queue, and an always-on sender picks the job up and sends the DM. Every box has a free tier.
1 Web app
- Job
- Dashboard, sign-in and receiving signals from Instagram
- Free-tier service used
- Vercel (Hobby plan)
2 Database
- Job
- Stores campaigns and DM logs
- Free-tier service used
- Neon (Postgres)
3 Queue
- Job
- Holds comments waiting to be answered
- Free-tier service used
- Redis Cloud (30 MB)
4 DM sender
- Job
- Takes jobs from the queue and sends them; must stay on
- Free-tier service used
- Oracle Cloud (Always Free)
5 Email
- Job
- Sends the sign-in link to your inbox
- Free-tier service used
- Resend
| Box | Job | Free-tier service used |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Web app | Dashboard, sign-in and receiving signals from Instagram | Vercel (Hobby plan) |
| 2 Database | Stores campaigns and DM logs | Neon (Postgres) |
| 3 Queue | Holds comments waiting to be answered | Redis Cloud (30 MB) |
| 4 DM sender | Takes jobs from the queue and sends them; must stay on | Oracle Cloud (Always Free) |
| 5 Email | Sends the sign-in link to your inbox | Resend |
Limits to know before you start
It works only with Instagram — Facebook and TikTok are not supported
Your own account only; other people's accounts need Meta app review and a registered business to verify
Meta allows roughly 750 messages per hour per account, and only one private reply per comment
Oracle requires a card for identity checks and doesn't charge unless you upgrade, but a machine left idle for 7 days may be stopped and need a manual Start
Resend's test sender can only email the address you signed up with, so only one person can sign in
The original program doesn't stop repeat DMs to the same person — someone who comments several times may get several DMs
The 12 steps in short
The author took about 2–4 hours for the first install, with an AI assistant asking questions and fixing problems; someone who has never done this may take longer.
Copy the OpenReply code into your own private repository
Create a Neon database and copy its connection link into your own file
Create a free Redis Cloud queue and copy the link that starts with redis://
Create a Resend account to get an email-sending key, using the test sender
Generate 4 random secrets (the encryption key must be exactly 64 characters) and keep them in one file
Create the database tables once, using the direct link rather than the pooled one
Put the web app on Vercel, paste all the variables, then turn off Vercel Authentication
Create a Meta app of type Business, pick the single use case Manage messaging and content on Instagram, add your account as a tester, set the redirect and webhook (comments · messages · messaging_postbacks), then publish
Add the values from Meta (the Instagram App ID and App Secret and the Facebook App Secret) to Vercel and redeploy
Sign up for Oracle Cloud, create a VM.Standard.E2.1.Micro machine marked Always Free, install Node.js and run the sender with pm2 so it restarts itself
Connect Instagram in the web app, create a campaign, comment from another account and check the DM Logs menu
Set up an alert for when the sender stops, and back up the secrets file and the key file
4 places people get stuck
Meta's tester setup has two halves: add the name in the Meta app, then accept the invite inside the Instagram app too, or sign-in fails (Insufficient Developer Role)
You must turn off Vercel Authentication, or Meta cannot reach your web app and DMs go silent with no warning
Thai keywords set to whole-word matching miss comments without spaces (a comment of สนใจค่ะ does not match สนใจ) — use the any-comment mode and separate keywords with commas
Oracle shows Out of capacity when you create the machine — it isn't your fault; press create again a few times two minutes apart, or try early in the morning

Prompt for an AI to walk you through the setup
You are a patient setup coach. Walk me (I have never written code) through installing OpenReply so it replies to Instagram comments with an automatic DM, using free-tier services. Use plain English, one step at a time. Rules 1. Give one step, then wait for me to say it's done or send a screenshot. 2. Never ask me for passwords, keys, tokens or OTP codes in chat. I will copy and paste those into each service's own website. If I paste one into chat by mistake, tell me to create a new one right away. 3. If my screen doesn't match what you describe, ask for a screenshot (I will hide secrets before capturing it). Don't guess. 4. Tell me the cost and risk before the relevant steps, and never have me upgrade to a paid plan. 5. Each provider's free terms can change, so have me open the official plan page and compare before that step. Limits to tell me before we start: it works only with an Instagram Business or Creator account and only my own account · Meta allows one private reply per comment · Oracle requires a card for identity checks, doesn't charge unless I upgrade, and may stop a machine left idle for 7 days · Resend's test sender can only email the address I signed up with The 12 steps 1. Copy the OpenReply code (github.com/diwenne/openreply) into my own private repository 2. Create a Neon database and copy its connection link into my own file 3. Generate 4 random secrets (the encryption key must be exactly 64 characters) and keep them in one file 6. Create the database tables once, using the direct link rather than the pooled one 7. Put the web app on Vercel, set the build command to prisma generate && next build, paste all the variables, then turn off Vercel Authentication 8. Create a Meta app of type Business, pick the single use case Manage messaging and content on Instagram, add my account as a tester (and accept the invite inside the Instagram app too), set the redirect link and webhook (comments, messages, messaging_postbacks), then publish 9. Set up an alert for when the sender stops, and back up the secrets file and the key file Start by asking whether I have everything: Instagram Business or Creator, a Facebook account with a phone number, GitHub, an email, a card for identity checks, and a computer that can install Node.js. Then begin step 1.

Frequently asked questions
Is OpenReply really free?
The program is free and open source under the MIT licence. The services it needs (Vercel, Neon, Redis Cloud, Resend and Oracle Cloud) have free tiers the author used with no monthly subscription as of 13 October 2026, but each provider's free terms can change and Oracle requires a card for identity checks, so check the official pages again before you start.
Can OpenReply work with Facebook or TikTok?
No. As of 13 October 2026 the program supports only Instagram (checked from its code and project documentation). For comment replies on Facebook or TikTok you need a different tool.
Is OpenReply hard to install, and how long does it take?
There are 12 steps, and the step people get stuck on most is setting up the Meta app. The author took about 2–4 hours for the first install with an AI assistant asking questions and fixing problems; someone who has never done this may take longer, and Oracle requires a card for identity checks.
Does OpenReply keep sending DMs when my computer is off?
Yes, if the DM sender runs on a machine that stays on, such as an Oracle Always Free machine, rather than on your own computer. But if Oracle stops a machine left idle for 7 days, the sender stops until you press Start again, so set up an alert.
