Thai dress faces UNESCO review late this year: get your shop's photos ready for Loy Krathong

Chud Thai, Thailand's national dress, has not yet been inscribed as UNESCO intangible cultural heritage. It is due to be reviewed at the 21st session of UNESCO's Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, in Xiamen, China, from 30 November to 5 December 2026, as The Nation reported on 1 September 2026. Loy Krathong falls on Tuesday 24 November this year, six days before the meeting opens. If your shop sells or rents Thai dress for Loy Krathong, your product photos should be ready before then.

Chud Thai and UNESCO: what we know so far

  • Status · still a nomination, not yet inscribed.

  • The list · the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, which is separate from the World Heritage List of monuments and sites.

  • 8 women's styles · the Chud Thai Phra Rajaniyom styles, namely Thai Ruean Ton, Thai Chitralada, Thai Amarin, Thai Boromphiman, Thai Dusit, Thai Chakri, Thai Siwalai and Thai Chakraphat.

  • 3 men's shirts · the Phra Rajathan shirt, short-sleeved, long-sleeved, or long-sleeved with a waist sash. With the women's styles, that makes the 11 styles the Chud Thai campaign presents.

  • In Paris · the Musée des Arts Décoratifs is showing Thai dress in its exhibition La Mode en Majesté until 1 November 2026.

What a Thai dress shop should prepare before Loy Krathong

  1. Photograph every real outfit in bright, even light, laid flat or hung so the whole piece shows, then take separate close-ups of the fabric pattern, embroidery and buttons, because a full-length shot can't show all the detail in the pattern. If you have a mannequin or someone to wear it, add a full-length shot that shows how it is wrapped and pleated.

  2. Measure every real outfit and put the chest, waist, hip and length in the listing. A photo of someone wearing it shows how it looks, not whether it will fit your customer.

  3. Name each style to match what you sell. If it is one of the 11 styles, use that name; if you have adapted the design, say it is a modern adaptation. Then list them early enough for buyers to receive their outfits before 24 November.

If you don't have on-model photos yet

Plien Roob is our own site. Its Product to Model tool turns a flat-lay or hanger photo of an outfit into a photo of someone wearing it, in one of more than 60 Thai settings, with nothing to type. AI may not get the pattern, wrap or pleats exactly right, so zoom in and compare every image with the real outfit before you list it.

Frequently asked questions

Is Thai dress (Chud Thai) UNESCO World Heritage yet?

Not yet inscribed, and the list it is nominated for is not the World Heritage List. The Nation reported on 1 September 2026 that Chud Thai remains a nomination and has not been inscribed. UNESCO's Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage is due to review it at its 21st session in Xiamen, China, from 30 November to 5 December 2026. The nomination is for the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, which is separate from the World Heritage List of monuments and sites. The Chud Thai campaign presents 11 styles: 8 Chud Thai Phra Rajaniyom styles for women and 3 forms of the Phra Rajathan shirt for men.

How should a Thai dress shop prepare product photos before Loy Krathong?

Loy Krathong falls on Tuesday 24 November 2026. Photograph every real outfit in bright, even light so the whole piece shows, and take separate close-ups of the fabric pattern, embroidery and buttons. Measure the chest, waist, hip and length of the real outfit and put them in the listing, because a photo of someone wearing it doesn't show whether it will fit your customer. Name each style to match the outfit and call adapted designs a modern adaptation. For AI-made images, zoom in and compare the pattern with the real outfit in every image before you list, and label them as AI if the marketplace you sell on requires it.
