Letting AI Guess the Aspect Ratio: Up to 48% of Full-Body Images Came Out the Wrong Shape — Data From 113 Jobs in Our System
Last updated 2026-10-05From Plien Roob — AI model photography for online stores

This page is written by the Plien Roob team from generation jobs our own system recorded — not a test by an outside body. We publish the numbers and how we measured so that any shop using any AI product-photo tool can check its own results the same way.
What we noticed
A batch of premium-tier images looked like a person pasted onto a background, with lighting that didn't match the scene, while the standard tier looked fine on the same scene. We ruled out the obvious guesses first — a broken model, a scene that was too hard, a badly cropped reference, a changed prompt — because each one failed to match our records. For example, our team reviewed the 10 images the premium tier produced on another night scene and saw no such problem, and the same prompt produced good images on the standard tier.
What we found when we kept digging was the aspect-ratio field set to "auto", which in our system at the time meant sending no ratio to the AI at all and letting it guess. We believe this was the main cause, but the numbers below measure only the shape of the image — not lighting quality or the pasted-on look.

Why the premium tier was hit harder
On the standard tier, most images with no ratio set still came out portrait (27 of the 35 full-body jobs with no ratio set). We understand that's because that tier has some default shape of its own. The premium tier had no default at the time and, as far as we could see, read the shape from the scene image instead. In one job, a square scene became a wide frame (about 1.8 times wider than tall); the part not in the original scene was about 44% of the final image (calculated from the image sizes), and the AI painted the product a second time to fill the empty space. The credits spent on that image were wasted. That is the only case we cite; it does not mean this happens every time.

What we changed, and what you can reuse
Set the aspect ratio explicitly every time; don't leave it on auto if your tool has the field.
Full-body 3:4 · half-body 4:5 · close-up 1:1 are the defaults our system now sets for product-to-model jobs when no ratio is chosen.
Try 5–10 images of your own products and count how many come out the wrong shape before buying a large pack from any tool.
Limits of these numbers
All figures come from Plien Roob's own system, and almost all (112 of 113 jobs) are test jobs from our own team, not paying customers' work. Each group is small (14 to 43 jobs). The numbers measure only the shape of the image — not lighting quality or the pasted-on look. Results belong to the models and versions we used on the date measured, and other tools may differ. We do not claim this is an independent test.
If you sell on Shopee or TikTok Shop, each platform's size and ratio rules have their own page. To try Plien Roob, sign up for a one-time 10 credits; the first image carries no watermark.
Frequently asked questions
What is an aspect ratio and why does it matter for AI images?
It is the width-to-height ratio of the image — 3:4 is portrait, 1:1 is square. If you don't set it, some tools guess from the reference image and return a different shape from the one you wanted.
Where does the 48% figure come from?
From 21 premium-tier full-body model-image jobs in Plien Roob's system with no aspect ratio set; 10 of them did not come out portrait. Almost all are test jobs from our own team. It is our own data, not an independent test.
Will other tools have the same problem?
We haven't tested other tools, so we can't say. The safe approach is to set the ratio explicitly every time and try your own products before buying a large pack.
